Many of us have seen movies about whaling that took place in the 1700’s and 1800’s where the tall ships would hunt and chase the whales in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Such movies as “Moby Dick” and “Into the Deep” have presented some fascinating scenery where the men in the small boats with spears connected to strong ropes would chase the whales, spear them, be pulled on a wild chase that could put the men in great jeopardy, and haul in their catch along the sides of the tall ships. The sailors would then begin the process of stripping the animal of its meat and skin, cut the whale’s blubber in manageable pieces and store the contents in the hold to be processed into whale oil. The oil would then to be sold on the market for the oil lamps that were used for lighting in homes and businesses. It was a very profitable business at the time.
We also have the Biblical story of Jonah. He had been called by God to go to the city of Nineveh, to preach to the people of the impending judgement that the Lord was about to bring down on the city. But Jonah wasn’t about to answer the call of God upon his life. “But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it and went with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. But a great storm arose, and the mariners called out to their gods after throwing the cargo overboard. but Jonah hid in the lowest part of the ship and was fast asleep.”
So they cast lots to see for whose cause that the storm came upon them, and the lot fell upon Jonah. When they discovered that Jonah’s running from the call of God was the reason for the tempest, for Jonah had told them who he was and that he had fled from the Lord’s directive, they all called out to the Lord, asked for forgiveness, and then picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea. The sea then ceased from its raging as soon as they threw Jonah overboard.
Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. While there, Jonah prayed to the Lord, acknowledging and repenting of his wrongful fleeing from the calling of God upon his life. And then the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. Jonah fulfilled the calling to go to Nineveh to preach repentance from their sinful ways, and God spared the city from the destruction He was about to fulfill upon it.
Now hear the Word of the Lord this day; ” I have sent to you the entire Word of Life for the purpose of developing you into a workman that needs not to be ashamed. I have called you into a ministry of reconciliation. Be reconciled to Me now says the Lord. My purpose is to speak to you, and to anoint you to worship the Lord with all of your being. Think about the offering you have been giving Me . Has your whole heart truly been engaged with Me? Do you think that I cannot see this? If you are distracted while trying to look like you love someone, do you truly believe that it goes unnoticed by those you spend your time with? Trim away and lay aside those things that are drawing you away from the wholehearted love I created you for.
I have sent My Spirit; so that you will become a vessel of honor, to help you prepare for the oil of anointing that is coming. It is not by might, nor by power but by My Spirit, says the Lord. You will experience the unction from the Holy One and you will come to know all things that pertain to life and Godliness. For God does not give you the spirit of fear but of power, of love and a sound mind. All the things that I have been showing you will be brought to your remembrance again because I have sent forth My Word; it will not return to Me voided or incomplete. My Word will accomplish the purpose for which I sent it;” says the Lord.
Upon this Rock I will build My Church. And the gates of hell shall not prevail against it; says the Lord.
